Founded in 1969, The University Of Alabama At Birmingham is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. On September 21, a 1969 Chevy K5 Blazer debuted at the UAB vs South Alabama football game. Since UAB is known for being the home of the Blazers, this classic Blazer is no doubt a perfect match. UAB recently acquired the truck to commemorate the 50-year milestone. The K5 Blazer will continue to make future appearances at UAB games.
“When we learned that Chevy’s Blazer model was also celebrating 50 years in 2019 and an original green-and-white one was available, we started to think of all the possibilities,” said Allen Bolton, senior vice president for UAB Finance and Administration. “Through the UAB Education Foundation, we were able to make this investment in new and existing traditions of which the Blazer will be part.”
The UAB athletics program goes back to the 1970s, but an official mascot was not chosen until the mid-1990s. During a basketball game, “Blaze” the fire-breathing European Dragon was introduced as the new UAB mascot.
Edwards Chevrolet Downtown is a dealership that is located near the UAB campus. The dealership has agreed to maintain the 1969 Chevrolet K5 Blazer for free.
